Press Release: Inaugural Campaign Foodraiser

In response to the 2012 campaign season in which hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent to buy public offices around the nation, from local boards to the presidency, Occupy Springfield IL is proud to announce the launch of Campaign Foodraiser, a monthly food drive to benefit local food pantries.  On Friday February 10th Occupy Springfield IL invites any and all members of the community to come out to the 6th St. side of the Old State Capitol Plaza from 4-6 pm to drop off donations for the Salvation Army and meet members of the group.

In a recession, with the government reporting 12.8 million unemployed in the US for January 2012, the need for social services is strained enough without the austerity measures proposed around the nation and huge sums of money being spent to elect candidates rather than stimulate the economy.  While candidates say things such as, “I’m not concerned about the very poor.  We have a safety net there.  If it needs repair, I’ll fix it,” (Mitt Romney) many of us in the community recognize that the safety net been in need of repair, or at least adequate funding, for a long time.  Campaign Foodraiser is an attempt to alleviate some of the stresses on the local social services here in Springfield by providing organizations and individuals with much needed supplies.    Many service organizations get donations at the beginning of the month that are used up by the end and with this in mind, the Foodraiser on Friday February 10th is the kickoff to a monthly collection for a local social service.  On the fourth Saturday of every month, Occupy Springfield IL will gather at the Old State Capitol Plaza from 11am-1pm to collect food and other goods for various local organizations.

We encourage any and all members of the community to come out and make a donation to help those in need.  For those who cannot come out on February 10th, monthly drives will be held on the fourth Saturday of the month, including February 25th of this month.  Anyone who would like more information about Campaign Foodraiser or our organization can contact us at www.occupyspringfieldil.org, via e-mail at foodraiser@occupyspringfieldil.org, or leave a message at (217) 487-4948.
